Project Overview

Blackstone was engaged to execute a high-pressure (HP) module replacement on a GE 10-2 gas turbine supporting natural gas distribution operations. The objective was to restore reliable turbine performance within a defined outage window while maintaining strict safety, quality, and cost expectations.

Scope

The project involved the full replacement of the HP modular section of a legacy GE 10-2 turbine. Blackstone’s scope included:

  • Complete disassembly and replacement of the HP module
  • Sorting, labeling, and inventorying previously disorganized components
  • Preparation and staging of all materials for installation
  • Mechanical installation and alignment of the new HP section
  • Coordination of I/E (Instrumentation & Electrical) support
  • Final checks to ensure proper configuration with existing site layout

All work was executed by a peak crew of 8 personnel over 1,300+ manhours, with a strong emphasis on safety, efficiency, and workmanship.

Challenges

This project presented several complexities that required adaptability and technical expertise:

  • Inherited Worksite Conditions:
A previous contractor had begun disassembly but left components unsorted and undocumented, requiring significant rework before installation could begin.
  • Compressed Timeline:
The need to recover lost time while meeting contractual deadlines demanded precise coordination and execution.
  • Legacy Equipment:
The GE 10-2 turbine is a superseded technology, creating challenges related to limited documentation, parts familiarity, and configuration accuracy.
  • Expanded Scope:
Blackstone provided I/E support—outside typical core services—by mobilizing qualified specialists to meet project demands.
  • New Operating Environment:
This marked Blackstone’s first project at this specific site, requiring strong collaboration with on-site technical advisors and heightened attention to communication and execution standards.

Customer Benefits

Despite the challenges, Blackstone successfully delivered a fully operational turbine within the agreed budget and schedule. Key outcomes included:

  • Restored turbine reliability for uninterrupted natural gas distribution
  • Minimized downtime and avoided revenue loss
  • Maintained a strong safety record throughout execution
  • Delivered high-quality workmanship under complex conditions

The success of this project led to additional work of similar scope at other locations, further reinforcing confidence in Blackstone’s capabilities.
